FOUNDATION FOR DIGITAL JUSTICE REJECTS NBC PUBLIC NOTICE; VOWS COURT ACTION TO DEFEND BROADCAST INDEPENDENCE

Monday, April 20, 2026

Lagos, Nigeria.

The Foundation for Digital Justice (FDJ) hereby rejects the National Broacasting Commission’s Public Notice dated April 17, 2026, as a calculated attempt to muzzle independent broadcasting and suppress press freedom ahead of the 2027 general elections.

This directive reflects a troubling pattern of regulatory intimidation designed to shrink Nigeria’s civic space and compel journalists into self-censorship. The threat of sanctions for “personal opinions” expressed by journalists constitutes a direct assault on constitutionally guaranteed freedoms of speech and expression rights that belong equally to journalists and every Nigerian citizen.

As a Digital Rights advocacy organization, FD will not tolerate the NBC’s weaponization of platform regulation as a tool of censorship.

Accordingly, FDJ calls on the NBC to withdraw all related directives and notices within seven (7) days. Failure to do so will compel us to take immediate and appropriate legal action to defend Nigeria’s civic space against this regulatory overreach.

Signed,
FDJ Communications Team
